Nutrient Burn: How to Identify and Fix It

What nutrient burn looks like
Nutrient burn (nute burn) typically appears as yellow or brown tips on leaf fingers, progressing inward if feeding continues. Leaves may look unusually dark green — a sign of excess nitrogen.
In severe cases, leaf edges curl under and become crispy. Unlike some deficiencies, burn rarely affects the oldest leaves first; it hits the most actively growing parts of the canopy.

Nutrient burn vs. nitrogen toxicity vs. light burn
It's easy to misdiagnose tip issues. Match your symptoms carefully to choose the right fix:
- Standard Nutrient Burn: Tips of fan leaves turn bright yellow or brown and dry out. This is caused by high overall salt concentration (high EC/PPM) in the root zone.
- Nitrogen Toxicity: Leaves become extremely dark green and the tips bend sharply downward, creating a hook or 'claw' shape. It often occurs in veg or early flower from excess vegetative nutrients.
- Light Burn: Bleached yellow or white patches on the uppermost buds and fan leaves directly under the light fixture. The leaves remain structurally intact (not crispy or clawed) and lower leaves are completely green.

If the tips are brown but the leaves are clawing, address Nitrogen toxicity first by cutting grow formula in half.
Common causes
The most frequent cause is feeding at full strength when the manufacturer's chart assumes aggressive growth conditions. Many growers run nutrients at 50–75% of label dose with better results.
- Feeding full-strength nutrients every watering
- Salt buildup in medium from lack of flushing
- Combining multiple additive products at max dose
- Hot soil or pre-charged super soil in seedlings
Dilution & EC adjustment guide
If you grow in coco or hydro, correcting overfeeding is a simple math equation. If your reservoir EC is too high, you must dilute it with plain, pH-adjusted water.
For example, if your current reservoir is 2.4 EC and your target is 1.6 EC, you need to reduce the salt concentration by 1/3. Drain exactly 1/3 of your reservoir and top it off with fresh, plain water. Always adjust the final pH after diluting.
- Soil flushing: Pour 2–3 times the volume of the pot in plain, pH-adjusted water through the medium to wash out excess salts.
- Coco flushing: Flush with a half-strength nutrient solution until the runoff EC matches your input target. Flushing coco with plain water can strip its calcium buffer.
Recovery steps
Stop feeding immediately and flush with plain pH-adjusted water (or half-strength for coco) until runoff EC drops significantly. For soil, 2–3× pot volume in water. For coco, flush until runoff is clear.
Remove severely damaged leaves — they won't recover. Resume feeding at 25–50% strength only after new growth looks healthy for 5–7 days.
Pro tip
When in doubt, underfeed. Cannabis tolerates slight underfeeding better than burn.
