Mainlining and Manifolding Cannabis for Symmetrical Yields

Create a symmetrical 8-cola manifold to distribute nutrients and light evenly across all bud sites for maximum yield.

The science of mainlining and manifolding

Mainlining is a high-stress training (HST) method designed to construct a symmetrical branch structure, or 'manifold', at the base of the plant. In a natural cannabis plant, auxin hormones drive apical dominance, directing most energy to one central main bud while lower branches receive less energy, resulting in smaller popcorn buds.

By topping a young plant and stripping all growth below the cut, you force the plant to split its vascular system. This divides the flow of nutrients, water, and growth hormones equally between the remaining branches. Repeating this topping symmetrically creates a manifold with 8, 16, or 32 equal colas, distributing light and energy perfectly across the canopy.

Step 1: The first top and node stripping

Let your seedling grow until it has 5 or 6 healthy nodes. Do not top too early, as a robust root system is required to handle the shock of heavy pruning.

Cut the main stem clean off just above the 3rd node. This leaves you with three nodes on the plant.

Strip away all vegetative growth, leaves, and side shoots below the 3rd node. Your plant will now consist of a single bare main stem with two primary branches growing out of node 3. This is your manifold's base.

Gently tie these two primary branches down horizontally to your pot's rim using soft plant ties, forming a flat 'T' shape.

Step 2: Second and third toppings

Allow the two horizontal branches to grow out until they have 3 nodes of new growth. It is now time to double your colas from 2 to 4.

Top both main branches down to their 1st node. Prune away the growth at node 2, leaving the shoots at node 1 and 3. This creates 4 equal growth tips.

Once these 4 branches establish 3 nodes of their own, repeat the process. Top all 4 branches down to their 1st node, stripping everything else. This yields exactly 8 symmetrical, independent colas.

Keep all 8 growth tips tied down to the same height. Symmetrical height is key: if one cola is higher than the rest, it will capture apical dominance and outgrow the others.

Pro tip

Ensure your plant is growing vigorously before each top. Top only when the growth tips look bright green, thick, and healthy.

Topping for 16 or 32 colas

While 8 colas is the standard for small tents (2x2 or 3x3) and short vegetative periods, you can expand the manifold to 16 or 32 colas if you have a larger grow space (4x4) and are growing in soil or coco with a longer veg time.

To create 16 colas, top all 8 colas once more after they grow 3 nodes. Be aware that each round of topping adds 10-14 days to your vegetative stage as the plant recovers. Running 32 colas requires a massive root system and is best suited for hydroponics or large 15+ gallon living soil pots.

SCROG alignment and canopy management

Once your 8 colas are established and growing upward, install a trellis net (SCROG) 10 to 12 inches above the pot rims. As the branches reach the net, tuck and weave them into separate squares.

This flat canopy ensures every bud site is the same distance from your LED grow light, maximizing photon absorption. During the first two weeks of the flowering stage, prune away all leaves and weak secondary shoots below the trellis screen (lollipoping) to keep all energy focused on the 8 main colas.

Pro tip

Mainlining is only suitable for photoperiod strains. Never mainline autoflowers, as their automatic flowering timer does not give them time to recover from the stress.
