Step-by-step guide to bud washing. Clean away dust, bugs, ash, and hair from outdoor harvests without losing potency or terpenes.

Why wash outdoor cannabis buds?

Outdoor cannabis plants spend months exposed to wind, rain, insects, wild animal droppings, dust, pollen, and airborne pollutants. If you grow in dry, dusty climates or near dirt roads, your buds will be coated in a layer of fine dirt. Bud washing removes these contaminants, leading to clean ash, better flavor, and a much smoother smoke.

A common concern is that washing will wash away THC or terpenes. However, trichome heads are not water-soluble and are highly resilient to gentle rinsing. Think of it like washing an apple: the dirt comes off, but the fruit stays intact. As long as you use lukewarm or cold water and avoid violent agitation, your buds will retain their full potency, resin, and aroma.

Setting up the three-bucket washing station

To wash buds, you will set up three clean 5-gallon buckets side by side. Use clean, filtered water (distilled, reverse osmosis, or clean tap water).

Bucket 1 (Sterilization & Cleaning): Fill with lukewarm water. Add 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide (this kills mold spores and bacteria on contact). Alternatively, add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (the acidic reaction helps dissolve dirt, bugs, and sticky residues).

Bucket 2 (Warm Rinse): Fill with warm, clean water to rinse off the cleaning agents from Bucket 1.

Bucket 3 (Cold Rinse): Fill with cold, clean water for a final rinse, which helps firm up the trichomes.

The washing and agitation technique

Harvest your plant and cut it into manageable branches. Perform a rough wet trim first to remove large fan leaves that do not have trichomes. This makes the buds easier to wash and dry.

Submerge a branch completely into Bucket 1. Swirl it gently back and forth and in circles for 30 to 45 seconds. Do not let the buds hit the bucket walls, as this can bruise the flowers or knock off trichome heads.

Lift the branch, let it drip for a few seconds, then submerge it in Bucket 2. Swirl gently for 20 seconds to rinse. Repeat the process in Bucket 3 to finish.

Pro tip

Look at the bottom of the buckets after washing a few branches. You will be shocked by the amount of black dirt, sand, and dead insects left behind.

Drying washed buds safely

After the final rinse, hang the branches upside down. Use a clean towel to gently pat the buds if they are dripping wet, but do not rub them.

For the first 4 to 6 hours, place an oscillating fan pointing directly at the hanging buds to evaporate surface water quickly. This initial fast dry is critical; leaving standing water on dense buds will trigger mold or bud rot.

Once the surface water is dry, move the branches to your standard drying room (maintained at 60°F and 60% relative humidity) and dry them normally over 10 to 14 days.

Pro tip

Never wash buds that already show signs of active bud rot (botrytis). Water will spread the mold spores to healthy buds.
